Tots in Tune is a fun, active music class for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers in Ross-on-Wye and the Forest of Dean. Lead by a professional music educator, classes consist of a high-quality structured session with singing, active songs, dancing, games, sensory activities and instrument play, and we finish up with social and play time with refreshments.
Classes for 0-4 year olds are currently running term-time on Mondays at 10 am at Mary’s Church Ross-on-Wye, and Thursdays at 10 am at Forest Gate Church, Mitcheldean. These classes are designed to be suitable for all ages from newborn to preschool. We enjoy a mixture of well-known favourite songs and learn new songs especially designed for developing musicianship in the very young.
Each class follows a similar structure, there is plenty of variety each week, but there are also routine songs which the children get to know and love. There is a balance between floor songs, action songs and dancing. We gather together using the sensory blanket, gathering drum or giant scrunchie. We sometimes listen to songs using puppets or sing a story. We explore a variety of different instruments each week.
Each week has a different theme. We might make a journey somewhere, to the jungle, or outer space. We celebrate different seasons and festivals. We stay at home and explore our toys, or just celebrate our favourite nursery rhymes.
It is a relaxed class – there is no requirement for children to respond to the music in the ‘right way’. Each child is different and all are welcome. We finish class with refreshments and free play with toys and instruments. We are lucky to be able to use two fantastic venues, St. Mary’s Church Hall, Ross-on-and Forest Gate Church, Mitcheldean.
Classes cost just £5 per class, including refreshments. There is no sibling charge for families bringing more than one child. Booking is flexible – if there is space in class, you can book as you go along, or you can book in blocks for a discount. Sometimes this is recommended if classes get full. In Spring 2025 we ran our first Young Baby course. These quieter classes are especially tailored to younger, non-mobile babies. They are designed to be an introduction to singing and music-making with your little one. Rather than having a different theme each week, each class will include specially selected songs and activities appropriate for parents to use with their young babies.
Revise your favourite nursery rhymes remembered from your childhood, learn new songs which your baby will love, and enjoy multi-sensory activities together. Meet up with other parents in a relaxed setting, and have fun with your little one! These classes run as a 6-week course at a cost of £30. In addition to weekly classes in Ross and Mitcheldean, there is an intergenerational class on the first Wednesday of each month, at Ross Court Care Home. The class runs from 11am-12pm and follow the same structure as the weekly classes, with refreshments provided by Care Home. Please get in touch if you would like to come and try a class!
